I walked into my favorite McDonald’s on 14th Street and Northside Drive in Atlanta and it was totally different inside. They’ve installed new flat-screen kiosks that constantly rotate the menu. It was so vibrant and clean inside. It’s always a pleasant place to be. I’ve had book signings at this McDonald’s and fundraisers. There are flat-screen TVs all around and they show the news all day. This McDonald’s reminds me of “Cheers,” as everybody used to know me by name and knew what I wanted.

This time I noticed something different, though. No more worrying about cashiers and long lines. Simply step up to the machine, place your order — hold the ketchup, extra pickles — that’s right, you can customize your sandwich expressly to your taste and dietary requirements. Then wait for a staff member to bring your order to you. I’m lovin’ it!

This McDonald’s is part of a national pilot of 25 stores testing touch-screen ordering.
