It’s official: Straight Outta Compton reigns supreme at the weekend box office for the second week in a row,
America couldn’t get enough of the story of five guys from Compton who went on to impact the world with their hard-hitting debut album that changed the face of music forever.
In the week following its record-breaking opening, whispers of a proposed sequel and even a sort of spin-off about Snoop Dogg and the Dogg Pound have begun to materialize. Questions of biopics on other classic groups such as Public Enemy and Wu-Tang Clan have recently been raised as well.
Could this signal the beginning of a renaissance of hip-hop-themed films reminiscent of the early to mid-90s? Only time will tell.
With another $26 million collected at the box office this weekend, Compton has now crossed the coveted $100 million mark in only its second week of release. Maintaining its position at number is Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, which drew another $11.7 million. Debuting at No. 3 this week is the horror film, Sinister 2, which opened with a modest $10.6 million. Also bowing this week and landing at No. 4 with $8.2 million is Fox’s action adventure, Hitman: Agent 47. And rounding out the top five is the big-screen adaptation of ’60s spy comedy, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which brought in $7.4 million.
