For several months now, Caitlyn Jenner has been juggling her brand-new life as an openly transgender woman with the sad and dark matter of an investigation involving a deadly car crash she was in during the month of February. Although things looked grim for Jenner last week when reports claimed she’d likely be facing criminal charges, it’s now been revealed that she most likely won’t be charged.
As previously reported, the accident took place on Feb. 7 on the Malibu Pacific Coast Highway when Jenner’s Cadillac Escalade and four other cars were involved in a major pileup. Jenner’s car ran at a high rate of speed into a Lexus on Pacific Coast Highway, pushing the car of and 69-year-old Kimberly Howe into oncoming traffic, killing her.
Last week, it was reported that the L.A. County Sherriff’s office would present a case to the Los Angeles D.A.’s office to help prosecutors determine whether or not Jenner should be charged with vehicular manslaughter.
However, according to TMZ, sources say that the Major Crimes unit reviewed the L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept. 161-page report and determined that Jenner pumped her brakes several seconds before impacting with Howe’s car.
Although the D.A. could file manslaughter charges against Jenner for violating the speed law by not slowing down quickly enough, it’s relevant that she did try to avoid the accident. And it would be unusual for the D.A. to file criminal charges when a driver wasn’t negligent or inattentive.
For now, Jenner will have to wait and see what the D.A. decides this week, but apparently she’ll walk away a free woman.
