If you follow #TakebackHU, it is apparent that Howard University is in a state of crisis. The student body has used social media as a platform to address the serious issue of what appears to be a historically Black college with “historically Black problems.”
Although Howard University is among the most well-funded HBCUs in the country, the issues addresed are not new to many. Too often, students who attend an HBCU are faced with issues about financial aid, housing, safety and maintenance that should not exist. Schools like Howard can’t continue to say to students, “Just concentrate on your studies, pay your tuition and enjoy the HBCU experience.” Paying tuition costs $21,450 per year and housing and meal plans near $10K per year. It is unacceptable to the vast majority of the student body at Howard University to pay this money for poor services.
