Rapper Wiz Khalifa recently made an surprise appearance at his old high school, Taylor Allerdice, but not for a concert.

The “We Dem Boyz” rapper showed up at an assembly to personally hand out over nearly $50,000 worth of backpacks to the students. The assembly was for students who are in the Pittsburgh Promise program, a program that provides students with high GPAs and more than 90 percent attendance an opportunity to win college scholarships.

““It feels awesome to be back at Allderdice,” Khalifa said. “I love my school. I love Pittsburgh. I love being able to spread some positivity and give kids some hope. I just wanted to tell them to be themselves. Let them know that they’re doing the right thing with their lives right now, going to school and dreaming big and just trying to figure it all out.”

School principal Melissa Freiz says Khalifa’s willingness to make time to return to the school goes a long way with current students.

“It’s huge,” Freiz says. “It means he hasn’t forgotten where he’s come from, and so for us being able to share this moment with our students, it’s a really big deal.”

Ronald Brown, a senior at the school and fan of Khalifa, got the opportunity rap in front of the superstar and says it’s something he’ll never forget.

“It was one of the best moments of my life,” he says. “I love that he came back, showed the support for the Promise-ready kids, make us want to do better in school, you know, get those grades, be something.”
