The USP at Lewisburg is infamous as an overcrowded supermax. The facility has faced numerous federal lawsuits over its 23-hour confinement of inmates to their cells. The guards have been accused of pairing prisoners who are enemies in the same cell. This, according to the lawsuits, has led to violent assaults. Famous inmates have included Gambino family Mafia boss John Gotti, Lucchese Mafia family members Paul Vario, Jimmy Burke, Henry Hill and Thomas DeSimone. The life of these Lucchese crime family members was made famous in the movie Goodfellas.
