In a week that saw three new movies open in the top five, it was Jack Black’s family-friendly comedic horror, Goosebumps, that prevailed to take the lead at the weekend box office.

Black’s seemingly tireless promotion of the film based on R.L. Stine’s series of popular spooky books for kids, paid off as Goosebumps narrowly edged out Matt Damon’s The Martian, which had topped the box office the past two weeks.

Goosebumps’ $23.5 million take was enough to outdo Damon’s incumbent, The Martian, which is heading toward $150 million overall after earning another $21.5 million this weekend. Tom Hanks’ new thriller, Bridge of Spies, opened third this week with a modest $15.3 million draw. Writer and Director Guillermo del Toro‘s latest horror flick, Crimson Peak, opened at a disappointing $12.8 million, to total one of the lowest opening weekends in his career. And rounding out the top five is last week’s number two film, Hotel Transylvania 2, which brought in an additional $12.2 million.

The highly anticipated film Steve Jobs is set to open this coming weekend after two weeks of limited release. The Aaron Sorkin penned feature is expected to debut at number one after narrowly missing the top ten and landing at number eleven this week after only being shown in sixty theaters across the country.
