Spelman and Morehouse homecoming 2015: Top 5 moments

The weekend of Oct. 23, Morehouse College, Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University teamed up for their annual homecoming celebrations. Thousands of students and alumni joined together to celebrate their schools with the ’70s-themed “Can You Dig It” homecoming.

This is the first year that all three schools held their celebrations at the same time, doing away with the tradition of Morehouse and Spelman’s homecoming one week and CAU the next.

Below are the five best moments from SpelHouse homecoming 2015.

Neo Soul Concert (The Love Train)

R&B diva Chrisette Michele performed on Oct. 20 in Morehouse’s Kings Chapel for the annual neo soul concert. This event was titled “The Love Train” which was befitting because the singer moved the audience with her soulful voice and the smooth sounds of her latest album. The neo-soul concert is always a homecoming favorite because it is also an opportunity for students to showcase their R&B talents as opening acts.

Hump Wednesday (Funk Wednesday)

Morehouse’s weekly tradition, “Hump Wednesday,”nicknamed by students as “Hump,” is a school-sponsored event put together by the on-campus organization CASA. Every Wednesday from 5-7 p.m., students gather to enjoy music and festivities. “Hump” during homecoming is always a main event because it is the pre-party for the hip-hop concert. The theme of this year’s homecoming “Hump” was “Funk Wednesday.” Students enjoyed games, music as well as the unveiling for next week’s Miss Omega Psi Phi pageant.

Hip-hop concert

The hip-hop concert took place on Oct. 22 at Forbes Arena on the Morehouse campus. This year’s lineup included Atlanta’s local rap trio Migos who performed hits “Pipe It Up,””Wishy Washy” and “Handsome and Wealthy.” They effectively excited the crowd and built up anticipation for the forthcoming performances. After Migos performed their last song, DJ Drama came out and played hits such as “Antidote” by Travis Scott and “Hotline Bling” by Drake. After a quick set, DJ Drama introduced the New York rapper, Fabolous, who opened this year’s hip-hop concert. Fab performed a few songs off his latest album, while not receiving much energy from the crowd. Fab was saved by Rich Homie Quan’s surprise appearance during his set in which he performed “Walk Thru” and “Hit the Quan.” After Rich Homie exited the stage, Fab performed again and the crowd’s energy mellowed out. Headliner Wale was able to bring the energy back to the crowd. Wale’s exciting performance, which included climbing bleachers and moving guard rails for students to get closer to the stage, earned him an instagram shout-out from MMG label owner and friend Ricky Rozay.

Coronation Ball

Oct. 23, students attended the annual Coronation ball in midtown Atlanta wearing floor-length gowns and tuxedos. Each homecoming, the kings and queens of each school are crowned, followed by a collective coronation ball. Students who’ve achieved AUC royalty wear their crowns and sashes and celebrate their achievements and love for their schools with other students who voted them into those positions. The night was filled with catered food, great music and camaraderie.

Tailgate

Homecoming tailgate for the Morehouse vs. Bennet College game took place on Oct. 25 from 12-7 p.m. on West End Avenue. The biggest and most anticipated event of homecoming is the tailgate because it is a time for students to mix with alumni reliving their college days.
