Chevrolet and The Rainbow Push Coalition hosted a series of Money Matters Financial Empowerment workshops in Chicago recently. The workshops were designed to provide information that will increase financial literacy awareness, leverage financial literacy to increase good lending practices within the minority community and help African Americans “find new roads” and build a brand affinity for Chevrolet.
The lessons included everything from developing your first budget to learning how to build your credit. We spoke with Reginald E. Humphrey, senior manager of Supplier Diversity of General Motors, about the importance of this event and how they are adding value. He said, “Well, the key here is that Chevrolet is going to make an investment in the local community that buys our products everyday. My job here is not a job. It’s just to ensure that I am giving back to my community by sharing best practices of financial literacy that I have learned in 20 years of a career and 42 years of life. It would be a shame if I didn’t share these experiences with the community. At the end of the day, you have to apply wisdom and when you learn these valuable lessons and share them, especially with young people, they have one more step ahead of all of their counterparts when it comes to budgeting your money, investing your money and how to make sure you are spending it everyday in a wise fashion. GM values the communities in which it works and plays and we want to make sure we are a part of that community, not just selling vehicles, but actually investing in the education behind the investment into those vehicles.”
