Though it’s been twenty years in the making, a sequel to the 1996 blockbuster movie Independence Day is finally upon us.

Unfortunately for fans of the original film, one of the main characters, Captain Steven Hiller as portrayed by Will Smith, will not be a part of the upcoming project.

In a recent interview with Yahoo, Smith, who is currently riding high on an Oscar worthy performance in the film Concussion, talked about his reaction when he found out that Hiller was killed off in the upcoming film entitled Independence Day: Resurgence. The 47-year-old former rapper says it’ll be kind of hard for him to watch.

“I was working on Suicide Squad during that time,” said Smith. “[Independence Day director] Roland [Emmerich] and I had talked about it. The trailer looks really cool. I’m going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out… It was terrible when I found out my character died.”

Despite Smith’s absence from the film, a number of the actors in the original including Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, and Vivica A. Fox will reprise their roles and be joined by a few newcomers including Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, and Sela Ward.

Independence Day: Resurgence is set to be released on June 24, 2016. For more information on the film, check out its site at www.warof1996.com
