In case you missed it, life coach Iyanla Vanzant recently revealed her interesting take on love and marriage. During a recent segment on Tyrese and Rev Run’s new prime-time series “It’s Not You, It’s Men,” Vanzant, who has three failed marriages under her belt, offered up her opinion that relationships are simply an opportunity to learn. When asked whether she’ll marry again, Vanzant opened, “Never!-I would never ever, ever.” Explaining that she gave herself to men early on in life while looking for her father’s approval. She said, “Relationships are not where we go to have fun. Relationships are where we go to heal and where we go to learn. And who you’re going to attract is the person that’s going to bring to the forefront the thing you need to learn or heal.”
“I would not be a great wife based on the definitions and the standards of today. I’m a great partner because I see my partner as my equal,” she added. And while we’re ones to say “never say never,” Vanzant continued her point adding, “One of things that happens in our relationships is we either pick up somebody who needs our help or pick up somebody that can help us. Love and pure relationship and commitment can only exist among equals. ‘Cause if I see you as less than, I can’t commit. If I see you as more than, I can’t commit. So today, I’m looking for an equal. And I don’t want to be a wife. I want to be a partner. Because wives have to do stuff that I’m not doing.”
Of course the “Fix My life” host isn’t the only celebrity who has vowed never to marry again. Turth of the matter is (for many) these vows are simply a stage of working through pain from a broken relationship. In fact, many celebs including Halle Berry, Cameron Diaz, and Jenny McCarthy, all who made similar pledges as Vanzant, remarried later on in life. For five stars who swore off marriage only to find love down the road, hit the flip.
