Soul singing sensation Lalah Hathaway isn’t one to get into any controversy, but some fraternity members have pulled her into one due to a recent Instagram post.
A week ago, Hathaway posted a picture of herself in an Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity hat. She captioned it with the hashtags #daughterofAlpha #daughterofsoul. The hat was likely in honor of her late father, singer Donny Hathaway, who pledged the frat in the 1960s at Howard University, Eurweb reported.
But some people were not feeling Hathaway’s dedication and slammed her for putting on the hat.
“I’m sorry Lailah, but this isn’t yours to choose to wear,” one commenter wrote on Instagram. “Bro. Hathaway belonged to a fraternity, something we all took oaths to uphold, and regardless of anyone’s connection to it, if you’re not a member, you don’t have a right to the privileges.”
Another critic wrote, “That’s not (respect,) that’s not what u do. Send a shout out or happy founders day. Wearing their gear is disrespectful #facts.”
Some Hathaway fans came to the singer’s defense and felt the backlash was out-of-line.
“Those Alphas must’ve studied an abridged Chris Brown version of what it is to be an Alpha man. None of them crossed over for real as they remain ‘Bullies in a Burning Sandbox,'” one person wrote.
Another fan pointed out that many of the fraternity’s rules are a secret, and therefore outsiders have no way of knowing when a rule is being broken.
“What gets me is these rules and rituals are so G 14 classified to those who aren’t apart of the organization, yet they get all butt hurt when someone unknowingly does something they considered a no no,” the commenter wrote. “Quite the paradox huh? Basically these brothers are hollering ‘You should know better about our secret rules!!!’ …smh.”
