Caitlyn Jenner’s revealing reality series “I Am Cait” has gotten rave reviews here in the states both for helping making Caitlyn Jenner a cultural phenomenon and for letting America get a bird’s-eye-view into the life of a transgender woman. But even though many fans over here seem to like the show, new reports have revealed that the series hasn’t gone over so well across the seas and it’s now been revealed that the country of Nigeria has decided to ban the show for its depiction of trans lives.
According to media reports, authorities in Nigeria recently campaigned to have “I Am Cait” taken off of the air waves because they believe it promotes ideas that they don’t want their citizens “to be exposed to.”
The reports say that many Nigerian parents were complaining about the show, as well, saying that it wasn’t a show that was appropriate for children to watch.
With pressure coming from both parents and authorities alike, African broadcaster MultiChoice decided to give in to their requests and remove “I Am Cait” from its lineup of broadcasts.
“MultiChoice recognizes the importance of respecting the views of a number of its customers and all regulatory environments within which its service operates,” said MultiChoice in a statement. “After careful consideration, MultiChoice would like to inform its valued subscribers that the series will no longer air on the channel across our platforms.”
Unfortunately for Jenner, things aren’t exactly looking so good for the show over here in the States either. Despite its critical acclaim, viewership has progressively dropped since the shows first season. The debut season of “I Am Cait” started off strong last July with 2.7 million viewers. However, as the season progressed, the ratings continually declined and the season ended with just 1.3 million viewers.
The second season fared no better as the ratings dropped below a million and failed to rise back into the million mark again. Well, we’ll have to wait and see if “I Am Cait” even survives over here, but regardless of the show’s fate, Jenner will remain a global superstar.
