DJ Envy caused a media uproar this week when he shared his own harrowing tale of surviving an attempted robbery and why he supports the discriminatory and controversial stop and frisk laws across the country. However, Envy recently had a change of heart and decided to share many of his thoughts about the stop and frisk laws.
According to previous reports, Envy opened up about the robbery attempt during a recent episode of Power 105’s “The Breakfast Club” and explained that he was shot at by police impersonators while he was driving last week in New Jersey. Envy said a SUV flashing blue police lights pulled up behind him while he was driving to work at 3:00 am.
“Something doesn’t feel right about this,” he remembered thinking. “The police light was all blue and in New York and New Jersey, the police lights (are) red and blue.”
Envy decided not to pull over and the SUV chased him. Envy says he put on his brakes and let the SUV pass him before he put his own car in reverse to try and escape. However, that’s when the SUV stopped and a man in a black mask jumped out and began shooting at Envy’s car.
Envy says he drove in reverse for about a mile before losing the robbers. However, he said, “Five minutes later, they robbed somebody else, right on the highway.”
Having survived such a shocking attack, Envy explained that he supported stop and frisk laws because he wanted to get guns off of the streets.
“If I have to balance it out, I’d rather get stopped and frisked than shot at any day,” Envy said.
However, yesterday, Envy posted a photo of the bullet holes in his car, as well as a lengthy message about a conversation with activist and singer John Legend that he claims forced him to rethink his opinions on stop & frisk and denounce it.
