Senior Director, Corporate Social Responsibility – Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena

As senior director of corporate social responsibility for the Atlanta Hawks, Andrea Carter leads initiatives seeking to improve local communities and help grow the sport of basketball and the Hawks brand. The Spelman College alum previously served as director of communications for Boys & Girls Clubs of America for five years. There, she assisted with overall coordination and implementation of a new national campaign designed to encourage parents and children to spend more meaningful time together.

She also developed a communications strategy for more than 3,000 Boys & Girls Clubs in key markets. Carter credits her college education and her ability to maintain a level-headed positive attitude in the face of adversity as key factors in her success.

“At Spelman, I was surrounded by young women who were high achievers, had a great thirst for knowledge and pushed me to do my best,” Carter said. “As an only child, I never had biological sisters but during my four years at Spelman — and after — I amassed a great number of sisters. These women offer professional, spiritual and personal guidance that continues to this day and helped prepare me for my current role. The education I gained in the classroom and relationships forged within those gates are immeasurable.”

The confidence to be a bridge builder, the willingness to ask for help, and the belief instilled by her mother that success is measured by what one does for others helped Carter overcome the devastating loss of a good friend at the hands of her estranged husband. She became passionate about making the world safer for women and girls.

“I define a powerful woman as someone who is confident, committed; isn’t afraid to fail and is always willing to bring other women along … it’s not about having the highest job title or salary,” said Carter.
