How did you get your start in the fashion industry?
I knew early on that fashion was my passion. I’ve known that since I was a child. After graduating from The American Musical & Dramatic Academy in New York I was thrown into the fast-paced fashion industry and immediately began working as a stylist. I was very fortunate to have worked with the likes of Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Dawn Richard, K.Michelle and Ashanti early on in my career. This helped to set the tone that eventually led me to work with magazines such as GQ, Essence and Vibe to later becoming the manager of major fashion houses; Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga.
What made you cross over from fashion to producing and directing?
As a stylist and designer, I am stimulated and inspired by all forms of art and creativity. My second love outside of fashion is the theater. It allows me to use endless amounts of creativity, and to provide opportunities to minorities on the stage and behind the scenes. In this industry, we are often overlooked and I’m here to make sure that our voices heard in all areas of the art and entertainment industry.
How will An Evening with Phyllis Hyman be different from your debut musical Fabulous Sylvester?
My debut show Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical was the brainchild of me and my colleague Anthony Wayne. We recognized early on that we had something special but we did not expect for the show to become such a huge success. The show blew up overnight receiving reviews from The New York Times and Vogue’s Andre Leon Talley. We also received award nominations for the off-Broadway Alliance and the Audelco Awards. Wayne and I knew that if we decided to do another musical that it would be hard to top the Fabulous Sylvester. For An Evening with Phyllis Hyman, we have teamed up with the ultimate dream girl Sheryl Lee Ralph to create an unforgettable work of art. An Evening with Phyllis Hyman will bring to life the untold story of the life, career and music of the singer in her own words. It will be a very intimate three-show limited engagement introducing Broadway veteran Jacqueline B. Arnold as the incomparable Phyllis Hyman. An Evening With Phyllis Hyman is set to premiere in New York City, at the Actor’s Temple Theatre located at 339 West 47th St on Saturday, Jan. 28 and Sunday, Jan.29.
What’s next on your career calendar?
Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical has been picked up by Broadway so we are working on that now. I am also set to release my book How To Produce A Show From Your Couch in January of 2017.
