KD Young Cocky finds himself in the new crop of artists who are inspired by the sound of today. When listening to his music it’s clear that he is looking to make his mark. We spoke with KD about his influences and his inspiration.

Break down the meaning of your name.

KD means King Darrius. Darrius is my first name. Young Cocky is a reminder of where I’m from. You have to be strong to make it out. [There are] a lot of negative influences. Sometimes you have to stand on your own and be arrogant, strong, or in my case, cocky. I had to make myself stand out.

Who inspires you as an artist?

I got some of my biggest inspirations from Michael Jackson, OutKkast, Ludacris, Three 6 Mafia, Jay Z, Drake, Tupac, Biggie and Kanye. Just hearing some of the songs made me want to be an artist. I knew I could do what they do just as good or even better.

If you had to describe who you are as an artist how would that sound?

That sound would be considered an instrument meaning it can be a guitar, keyboard, drums. My sound & voice fuses with what music I make. My voice is an additional instrument to the music that creates the synergy of the sound. My distinct lyrics and words also play a major role in my ability to be a standout artist.

How does the fact that you are from Chicago influence your music?

Chicago plays a big part in my career. I’m able to tell stories about my city and speak on the things I’ve experienced. I’ve learned as long as I tell the truth about who I am and where I’m from the more people start to relate. Chicago could bring you down or lift you up but that’s your choice. I use the negativity and turn it into positivity. Without my life in Chicago, I wouldn’t be the man I am or the artist I am today.

Who are your top three artists from any genre and why?

Micheal Jackson, Drake and Kanye West. I’ve been watching Micheal since I was a kid. I loved his melodies and performances. Drake is amazing at songwriting and delivery when I listen to his songs I get that feeling wishing that I made the record. He helped me open up to different lanes and trying new things. Kanye West is a genius in my eyes. The way he mastered the business on top of being an artist and producer is genius and [since] he’s from Chicago he’s a big motivation.

Describe your creative process.

I love to have fun with my music no matter what. I like making music with the producer instead of having someone send me beats. It always comes out better. I find myself just going inside the vocal booth and saying whatever is on my heart at the moment. Sometimes I surprise myself

What is next for you?

I’m working on an album. It’s called Lifestyle. My single with Yfn Lucci is called “Lifestyle” as well. Look out for the video dropping in January.
