A trip to an all-night deli has led to a robbery and gunfight that involved popular rapper Fetty Wap. According to police, the rapper was in his hometown of Patterson, New Jersey when he and his entourage visited the Montclair Deli, a 24-hour grocery store, and local grill.
Police say they responded to a 911 call at 5:10 a.m. about a fight with shots fired at the in the area of Montclair Avenue and Paxton Street. When police arrived, they found two men who were shot within 2-3 blocks of the deli. One victim, a 34-year-old man, had a gunshot wound to his leg, another victim, 37, was found a short distance away with a gunshot wound to the chest. Another victim walked into the Hackensack University Medical Center’s trauma center suffering with a gunshot wound.
The shooting is under investigation, but at some point an altercation developed with Fetty Wap and his entourage. During the incident, the rapper’s gold chain was snatched from his neck and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken. Gunfire then erupted but did not involve the rapper or members of his entourage, according to the police. One of the tips police are following is related to a private house party in a nearby city. The area around the restaurant is quiet and a predominantly Muslim community and neighbors were shocked by the late night shooting.
Fetty Wap, birth name Willie Maxwell, was not hurt in the incident. There are many instances when rappers who return for a visit to their old neighborhood sometimes find themselves targeted. In December 2016, rapper Troy Avenue, birth name Roland Collins, was shot multiples times in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn around 5 p.m. on Christmas evening. The 31-year-old rap star was reportedly shot in the arm and head while en route to visit family in his hometown.
