2. “Master of None”
Best known for playing Tom Haverford on NBC’s best show to date “Parks and Recreation,” Aziz Ansari is the mastermind behind “Master of None.” Written by Ansari and Francis Yang, the show revolves around Dev Shah, an Indian-American living in New York City who isn’t much different from Ansari in real life. As Dev goes about his relatively normal life, “Master of None” provides commentary on the lives of immigrants and immigrant children, the lack of diversity in pop culture representation, and even on interracial romantic relationships. Additionally, Lena Waithe, who actually served as one of many producers for the “Dear White People” movie, has an especially excellent position within the show, playing Dev’s friend Denise. During the show’s preliminary stages, the characteristics written for Denise’s character did not involve her being gay or African American, but because Waithe is in real life, so is her character in “Master of None.”
