3. Orange Is the New Black
As Netflix’s most popular and critically -acclaimed original show, “Orange is the New Black” has used its platform to address several political and social issues plaguing society today. From the outset, the show touches on the cruelty of America’s prison-industrial complex and the problems inherent to privately operated prisons. “OITNB” also focuses on racial and wealth inequality, as the pre-prison life experiences of the show’s main character, Piper Chapman, were much different from the experiences of almost all the other primarily Black inmates. The show can also be thanked for providing an important platform for actress turned-activist Laverne Cox, who is making many important strides on behalf of transgender men and women everywhere.
