This Saturday, July 22, 2017, is the opportunity to relive a part of George’s dark past and a stark reminder of how much further the country has to go in race relations. Here is additional information if you plan to attend:
“The Moore’s Ford Bridge 71st Commemoration and the 13th Annual Re-enactment of the lynchings will take place at the Moore’s Ford Bridge on July 22, 2017. This is the annual protest of the injustice, with a reenactment of the human slaughter, that occurred on July 25, 1946, at the Moore’s Ford Bridge. The pre-enactment rally remembering victims of lynchings throughout the USA begins at 10:00 AM at the First African Baptist Church, 130 Tyler Street, Monroe, Georgia, 30655, on Highway 11 (across from Church’s Chicken). National and local clergy, political, civil and human rights, leaders will participate.
Further activities include a 1 p,m, motorcade to visit the gravesites, which begins at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, and proceeds to the farm house of Barney Hester (2932 Hester Town Road), Chester Grove Baptist Church, and finally at Mt. Perry Baptist Church. The motorcade will also include the old county jail at 203 Milledge Avenue in downtown Monroe. At 4 p.m. the Reenactment Ceremony takes place at the Moore’s Ford Bridge. The benediction dedicated to the legacy of Roger and Dorothy Malcolm (and their unborn baby) and as well as George and Mae Murray Dorsey will take place at 5 p.m. at the Historic Memorial Marker located at Highway 78 and Locklin Road. The public is invited to attend the day-long commemoration.”
