Rapper Neek Bucks is paying homage to his idol Jay-Z.

The Harlem native released his remake of Hova’s classic 1998 film Streets is Watching. After much speculation on when the long-term project would drop, Bucks released the film on Aug. 22. The 20-minute short film was produced by legendary Trackmasters duo Poke and Tone. Billboard exclusively premiered the remake that mixes Jay-Z’s classic flavor with Bucks new-age spin.

Bucks told rolling out why he felt it was so important to pay tribute to Jay-Z’s work two decades later.

How do you define your personal brand and your sound?

I would describe both my personal brand and my sound as authentic. I like my songs to tell a story and to tell the truth. As far as my personal brand, I’m very relaxed. You will either find me home chilling in the studio or playing basketball. I like to keep things simple.

What led you to pursue music?

I vividly remember my father selling cassette tapes of old-school R&B when I was 5 years old. He would take me with him throughout the neighborhood, and we listened to the music together. That is when I fell in love with music. I recorded my first demo on a cassette tape at 9 years old. It wasn’t until I was 18 years old that I took music seriously thanks to the reassurance and motivation from my friends.

Do you prefer freestyling or writing?

I don’t have my rhymes written when I go into the studio, so I guess I prefer freestyling. I listen to the track, vibe with it and just let it rock from there.

What was the inspiration behind your latest project?

On August 22, I released a remake of Jay-Z’s Streets is Watching. Thank you, Billboard, for the premiere. Jay-Z released his version in May of 1998, and I wanted to add my spin on it 20 years later. Trackmasters approached me and asked if I wanted to remake it. The rest is history.

Tell us about your upcoming project?

I’m in the studio now recording tracks for my album. I don’t have a set release date, but I want to have material ready to go. My single “Aint No Fun” featuring Vino World is out now though and is available on all streaming platforms.

Did you rely on faith or your own understanding for this project?

I believe that I am here for a reason, hence the name of my label, and I understand what it takes in order to achieve my goals. So, I guess you would say I combined the two. I wanted to create something people would rock with. The reception has been great so far.

Can you name three people who inspire you?

Jay Z, 50 Cent and my father. The three of them are the reason I got into music. My father introduced me to music at a young age. Get Rich or Die Tryin’ came out when I was in third grade, and I remember memorizing all of the lyrics. If it wasn’t for Jay-Z, I wouldn’t have recreated Streets is Watching.

Do you feel as if you are living your best life?

I’m living a pretty great life. My family is great. I have a great team. I’m living out my dream as far as music, you know? I want to tap into film, fashion and business. Music is the stepping stone to make those things happen.

What is next for Neek Bucks?

What next? I have a daughter on the way. She should be here any day now. Other than being a great father, I’m going to continue making music and making sure people know who Neek Bucks is.
