Last month, Mary Halsey of Rhode Island posted a Facebook video of herself doing a karaoke version of Missy Elliott’s “Work It.” It didn’t take long for the video to break the internet, as it racked up millions of views, even capturing the attention of Elliot herself. In fact, Elliot was so excited about the video that she praised Halsey, labeling her “funky white sister.”

That viral moment would lead to another, as Elliott surprised Halsey as she appeared Thursday, Sept. 13, on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to share her story and rap her karaoke version of “Work It.”
As Halsey began to fully lean into her performance, Elliott sauntered out on stage, much to the surprise of Halsey and the studio audience. While initially stunned, Halsey would quickly move past the shock to complete the song with Elliott.
She would then give Elliott a tender embrace, thanking her for a moment that she won’t soon forget.
“I wanted to cry tears of joy,” Elliott shared on Twitter after appearing on the show with Halsey. “Mary is one of the sweetest souls I met.”
