I’m not sure what is going on in the European fashion world lately — whether it’s ignorance, or a lack of diversity, or sheer disrespect the culture that has caused several designer brands to create collections that feature blackface and other racially discriminatory styles.
What I do know is that as long as they continue to do so, we will continue to boycott them. In light of the outrageous Gucci, Prada and Burberry scandals, rolling out created a list of Black designers to encourage our audience to support Black businesses.
We received such an overwhelming response that we have decided to shine a light on 10 more designers of color that you should know and support.
Hanifa Clothing – This women’s wear brand was created in 2012 by Anifa Mvuemba. She creates simple but fashionable designs with Black women’s bodies in mind.
RONDONOVAN Footwear & Accessories Inc. – This shoe and accessories brand was created by Georgia Tech graduate Ron Donovan. He created the brand out of necessity due to his difficulty finding size-appropriate, stylish and high-quality footwear for his 15 1/2 foot.
Talley & Twine -This watch brand was started with the goal of creating quality, attention-grabbing yet affordable timepieces. The Talley & Twine name came from a crime-riddled area in Virginia that has recently been revitalized, representing a dark past becoming a bright future.
House of Grayling Purnell -This is a Los Angeles-based luxury fashion house developed by celebrity designer Grayling Purnell. His styles feature beautifully embellished gowns and suits.
Kloset Envy -This is a women’s clothing brand created by fashion connoisseur Jai Nice. Her designs are bold and bright for the woman who dresses to be envied.
