Terror struck the playground of Wynbrooke Traditional Theme School, in the city of Stone Mountain, near Atlanta. It was right after lunch when an unknown shooter opened fire on students, hitting 10 of them with a pellet or BB gun, according to Dekalb County Police.

The incident occurred on Thursday, April 25, 2019, and when news spread of the shooting, parents rushed to the school to get their children. The DeKalb County School District police issued a statement that the shots came from a wooded area near the playground. An extensive search of the scene was launched by the school and local law enforcement, but no suspect was identified. At this time police cannot say why the students were targeted in the attack.

The students who were struck were transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta with non-life threatening injuries. All of the students were released to their parents after treatment. As a result of the shooting, police will be present at the school, as security is ramped up. It is not known at this time if the playground will be reopened to the students at the school that teaches up to the fifth grade.

Dr. Jermain Sumler-Faison, principal at Wynbrooke Traditional Theme School, issued the following letter to parents after the shooting:

“Dear Wynbrooke Wolverine Parents,

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that DeKalb County School District (DCSD) Police are investigating an event at Wynbrooke Elementary Theme School that occurred today where ten students suffered non-life threatening injuries from what appears to be a BB or pellet gun. The students were transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Hospital to be treated or picked up by their parents. The shots appear to have come from a position away from the school grounds. There was never a threat of anyone entering the school building and no other students were injured. The health and safety of our students is, and always will be top priority.”

The investigation into the shooting incident is ongoing and no suspect or motive has been identified by law enforcement.
