A native of Albany, Georgia, Rev. William Lawrence Mathis, is the senior pastor of Spring of Life-Giving Water Church in New Haven, CT. Pastor Mathis’ mission is to assist individuals in developing life experiences that empower and provide direction for their purposed lives.

When did you know that God was calling you to be a messenger of the gospel?
I think I always knew that I was called to ministry. I grew up in the church and it has always [been] a part of who I am, like a second skin.  However, I wanted something else for my life and as I look back I see that God was using both my desires and His will to route and reroute me to His purpose and plan. It is true what the Apostle Paul says, “For we know that all things work together for the good for those who love God and who are called according to His purpose.”  (Romans 8:28)

How important is it to have a personal relationship with God, Jesus Christ or a higher power?
I believe the key to any sense of wholeness and living abundantly, one has to be in relationships with the Creator God. Developing and maintaining a relationship with God allows for one to be sensitive to the move of God for your life… and in spite of what is required or expected, one can with confidence choose the path that God has ordained [and] prepared for our lives.  Often life and its challenges are not welcoming, but some are necessary and others are forced upon us by internal and/or external forces.

As a pastor, what is your greatest or proudest achievement
To see someone grow and develop into what God intends for their lives — with joy and peace.

Name two scriptures that address trouble?
Psalm 27 & II Corinthians 4

Why is it important for people to attend Bible study and Sunday School?
To know God is to have eternal life (John 17:3). God is His Word and His Word is Him and with Him (John 1:1).  All Scripture — I believe contained in the written text as well as through our constant communication with Him — is given (breathed out) by God and is profitable for doctrine.
