Malkia Hornsby, aka Milk, is one half of the dynamic production team, Milk + Sizz.  The husband and wife duo have chartered their success in pop, R&B, hip-hop and other music genres. Their progressive sound, infectious melody, and innovative lyrics have earned them Grammy Award-winning status. Aside from being a powerhouse in music production, Hornsby is also mother to a baby girl. She stopped by rolling out to speak with Sharon Reed about the blessing of motherhood.

As a mother, what are you most grateful for?

I honestly didn’t know I was going to be a mother. I am grateful for her as a person and her being. I didn’t have a plan to be a mom. That wasn’t my plan initially. In a conversation that I had with my stepmother, she was just talking about having kids, and I didn’t want kids. She said, “Well, what if your parents didn’t want you?” And I said, “I wouldn’t be here.”  Imagine how crazy that is seeing me now in this space. But that’s how I was. I didn’t really think about kids in that respect. I was very driven and things like that. But I’m literally grateful for her. I call her God’s baby. I’m grateful that she came when she did, on her own time, without any help. I don’t share that often because I just want to make sure that it doesn’t come off a certain kind of way, but I’m grateful that she’s here. I didn’t know I needed her until she arrived.

Did having your daughter bring out more?

I think that having my daughter gave me a deeper connection with her specifically. I feel very connected to my daughter in all realms. I’m just a little bit more limited in my time. I’m more cognizant of the projects that I take on because I’m not just protecting my energy anymore. It’s one thing to be married and to have a successful love relationship, and it’s a whole other thing to now have that relationship and a new person. That’s what motherhood has really brought out of me. … I can focus on all these other things and I could put them in the right boxes.
