The annual Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, billed as the largest Black festival in the world, has seen its share of megastars ripping the stage over the years, including Prince, Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige and many others.

But Michelle Obama may have put on the biggest show at Essence Fest by just showing up and showing out with her naturally curly hair.

While the former first lady gave the multitude a very intimate and personal recollection of her White House experience during a one-on-one interview with Gayle King, fans were marveling over her auburn-tinted tresses.

Essence magazine, which is part of the media group that hosts Essence Fest, reminded fans that this is not the first time that Obama has stunted with a natural look. She had natural curls on the cover of its magazine in 2018. And she sported a more natural look after the first family vacated the White House in 2017.

But when Obama appeared at the Louisiana Superdome this past 4th of July weekend, her natural look was long and much more pronounced, which did not go unnoticed by her vast adoring fanbase.

The two-time Ivy League graduate (Princeton and Harvard Law School) explained to the 2 Dope Queens about her hair:

“Well, you know, the first thing you’ve got to worry about is how to keep [your hair] healthy,” Obama said. “My whole goal was, I want to end this with hair on my head. And so now you’ve got to think about, how do you do that, you know? What are you doing? And are you swimming? Are you working out? But this wasn’t just a first lady journey. This is a Black professional womens’ journey.”

Check out a sampling of fans’ responses regarding Obama’s hair evolution since regaining her autonomy in her post-White House life:
