Rodriguez’s blunder and apologies created a debate on social media over who should be allowed to say the N-word. Although the word was used as a way to demean Blacks, it has been embraced as a term of endearment by some in the Black community.
In New York City and parts of New Jersey, Latinas often live in the same communities as Blacks and some are of African descent.
Cardi B, who has Dominican and Spanish heritage, has often faced backlash for her use of the N-word in rap songs. “It’s just something that is a lingo, like even I want to stop saying it,” Cardi B explained in a 2017 interview with DJ Vlad. “I really can’t stop saying it, I’m sorry…My parents, my father’s side, we’re Spanish, we’re Hispanic, and everything. They’re mixed people, we’re mixed with African and European.”
