BET alumni celebrate 40 years of creating, shaping and uplifting Black culture

Veteran journalist and author Ed Gordon, who helmed “Conversations with Ed Gordon” and “BET News” gave a candid, yet heartwarming testimony about his time with BET. Gordon conducted exclusive interviews with controversial public figures, such as O.J. Simpson. For Gordon, there was no favorite moment.

“It was the experience for me,” he explained. “BET was not perfect. … Sometimes it was maddening, but most of all, during the time that we were there, BET was magic.”

Other notable appearances included Sherry Carter of “Video LP” and “Video Soul,” Bobby Jones of “Bobby Jones Gospel” (the first show to premiere on BET), Charlie Neal of “BET Sports,” Prince DaJour of “Teen Summit,” Big Lez of “Rap City,” and former BET senior executives Jefferi K. Lee (production) and Curtis Symonds (affiliate sales and marketing). Each gave insight into the company’s evolution as the preeminent platform for exposing Black music, artists and culture to mainstream success.

With well-earned confidence, Symonds summarized the media titan’s indelible impact this way: “BET is the Obama of Black television and Black media.”
