How supershero Dr. Maya Green saved Black lives during a pandemic

“Superheroes don’t run from the fire…they run to it.”

In the case of sheroes like Dr. Maya, they not only run to the fire…but through it. Dr. Maya aka “Dr. Maya 100” (because she keeps it real with empowering medical advice for the community) runs through burning firestorms of elitism, racism, and countless other sociocultural strongholds to a broken system that limits and prohibits the adequate treatment of Black patients in need. A problem that has been clearly exposed during this pandemic where Blacks have been disproportionately affected, with far too many losing their lives.

Due to this broken system, Dr. Maya has chosen to be on the frontlines as a savior for “underserviced” Blacks during the pandemic. Dr. Maya set up tents early in March for COVID-19 testing in Englewood, one of the most underserviced Black communities in the country. She strategically positioned herself to test and quickly accelerate treatment to save the lives of Blacks who were most at risk of dying from COVID.

Dr. Maya ingeniously and heroically cut through the COVID runaround hyperbole with this process. She created a breakthrough regimen to circumvent the broken system to test Black patients – and wrote countless doctor letters so hospitals had to admit these underserviced patients at risk, particularly when they were being unjustly denied. Also whenever needed, she sent patients to the ER immediately in an ambulance, like in the case of the elderly Black man referenced, to treat those who may not have lived had she not courageously intervened.

Dr. Maya also coordinated a sophisticated COVID mobile testing operation. She rides in a medical van like a true #BlackGirlMagic Batgirl, to underserviced Black communities throughout Chicago that she’s identified on her “Shero-radar” as COVID hot spots. Dr. Maya arrives on-site with her supporting staff and tests people right on their block, right in front of their homes, with no discrimination. In doing so, Dr. Maya has been a superwoman to the community, saving countless lives.
