Teen poet Fanta Ballo awarded 1st ‘Wonder Grant’ by Shawn Mendes Foundation

You finished writing your book in quarantine. How did you remain productive while writing during such an uncertain time?

I think the biggest thing was telling myself that it’s OK to, like, not be strong. So, like, I give myself those days where I can just be, and I think that helps with the days where I’m unproductive because it’s not like I’m in work mode all the time. But more than that, I see my art like my words as a form of activism, so it’s like I’m writing for a purpose. And that also keeps me going because it’s like this is bigger than me. I’ve learned this year that my writing is bigger than me because of the people that it could impact.
