Poet Hannah Sawyerr says a writer’s work should ‘make the reader feel seen’

Describe the arc of your literary career.

I feel like it’s just beginning! When I was younger I wrote and performed a lot of poetry and in 2016 I was recognized as the Youth Poet Laureate of Baltimore. After that, I started performing even more and was featured in programs like BBC News “World Have Your Say” and the National Education Association’s “Do You Hear Us” campaign. Last November I was selected for Pitch Wars, a mentorship competition that ends in an agent showcase, and received mentorship under Dante Medema and Liz Lawson. That manuscript landed me representation with my agents, Joanna Volpe and Jordin Hill.
