Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) was a key theme in our culture in 2020, and continues to be a part of the conversation in 2021 and beyond. Trailblazers like Lester Booker Jr., continue to use their spheres of influence to drive social change within our communities.
Booker recently joined Citizens Bank as the first-ever vice president, head of diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) communications. He is responsible for providing communications counsel and thought leadership, supporting and advancing the organization’s initiatives, strategic priorities and vision.
Citizens is one of the oldest and largest financial services firms in the United States with a history dating back to 1828. When asked about his new role, Booker stated that he was very excited and …”honored to join such a prestigious organization that’s committed to creating an environment where everyone is seen, heard and respected.”
Booker went on to say that this role “… really allows me to utilize the various experiences that I’ve gained throughout my career to drive cultural change within the organization at a very pivotal time.” In addition to heading DE&I communications, Booker is also responsible for the environmental, social and governance (ESG) communications work as well.
Previously, Booker worked as Global Communications Manager at General Motors (GM), where he played a critical role in driving some of GM’s most important long-term strategic communications initiatives designed to increase the company’s reputation as a corporate leader, including diversity and inclusion communications, corporate giving communications, program operations, and international communications. During his time at GM, Booker oversaw the 50-year partnership with the National Newspapers Publishers Association (NNPA), and spearheaded strategic media engagement for Cadillac with the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) and Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s (CBCF) Annual Legislative Conference within the Global Public Policy organization.
