The family and estate of the late rapper Malcolm “Mac Miller” is not supporting the upcoming biography about the Pittsburgh MC’s life. Mac Miller’s mother Karen Myers took to Instagram on Friday, May 7 and stated that the book’s author had “no relationship” to Mac Miller or “access to his friends and relatives” and called for his fans to ignore the book.
“It has come to the attention of the family and friends of Mac Miller that a new book called Most Dope: The Extraordinary Life Of Mac Miller by Paul Cantor has recently been made available for pre-order. This book is not authorized or endorsed by [Miller’s] family and has been written by a writer with whom [he] did not have a relationship,” Meyers stated in her post.
The Best Day Ever rapper passed away from an accidental overdose in September 2018. Most Dope: The Extraordinary Life Of Mac Miller is scheduled to be released on January 18, 2022. Miller’s mother also claims that the book’s release – which is a day before Mac Miller’s birthday – “is not accidental” and using “Malcolm’s birthdate as a marketing tool is exploitive and incredibly disappointing.”
“Furthermore, the writer had no meaningful access to those that were closest to Miller — friends, family, and collaborators, etc. In fact, the writer of this book was made aware at the outset of the process of writing this book that the family and friends of Malcolm were uncomfortable with him authoring this biography, yet he chose to proceed against our polite insistence that he not do a disservice to Malcolm’s legacy through writing a book without legitimate primary sources,” Meyers further wrote on IG.
Miller’s family urges “those that wish to support Malcolm and his legacy [should] abstain from purchasing this new book” and instead support another forthcoming book on the late rapper, The Book of Mac, written by Donna-Claire Chesman, in which the estate was involved. The Book of Mac is scheduled to be released on Oct. 26. Check out Mac Miller’s mother’s entire post denouncing the upcoming “unauthorized” biography on the following page.
