BMI executive Byron Wright is making major moves

How do you balance your personal lifestyle while managing day-to-day relations at BMI?

I’m very intentional with my me [time] and family time as I think it’s very important to find that balance. For me, quality time with my family, especially my two daughters Anylah and Zara, is so vital. Sundays are my day to completely zone out from anything work-related.

How did you arrive at this career choice? Was it a deliberate decision or a gradual and natural evolution?

I figured out that I wanted to pursue a career in the music business when I was in high school. Growing up in Atlanta, I saw so many successful people in the industry [who] looked like me from Dallas Austin and LA Reid to Babyface, Jermaine Dupri, and many more. From there, I interned all over Atlanta just trying to learn as much as I could. Getting into the music business was a very deliberate decision for me.

How do you stay at the leading edge of your craft?

Never stop learning! You must keep challenging yourself in order to grow and remain inspired. When I left BMI in 2016 that was my goal: to continue to grow and learn in this business. I held positions on both the publishing and label sides which allowed me to learn so much about the business and myself during that time. Since my recent return to BMI, I now see things differently having firsthand experience on how various areas in the industry all operate separately and come together.
