Maggie Anderson and her family were threatened for supporting Black businesses

Why is it important for experienced Black women to reach back and help younger women of color?

There’s just not enough of us in positions of influence and power. And that’s why most people, Black and not, assume we do not exist, or when we do, we are an exception to dismiss, not a standard to strive toward. Making it is hard, but reaching back, like Harriet Tubman did, and bringing some with us, is heroic.

What thoughtful or encouraging piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

Spend more time with my mother. Journal. Start a business as a teen. Don’t think college is the starting point for realizing purpose and dreams.

As a successful woman in business, what is your greatest or proudest achievement?

It would be earning the title “the Rosa Parks of economic justice,” deciding to leave corporate and law [and] becoming a full-time activist.
