S.A. Cosby provided a contrast of characters, one Black father and one White, who have little in common besides a criminal history. The fathers have had their fair share of regrets from the past and have to challenge their own prejudices as they seek out a quest for revenge. Throughout the story, they both showed an unwavering sense of loyalty. Ike would confront Buddy on his ignorance when it came to race and Buddy would call out Ike for his hypocrisy.
This novel can spark many important conversations about race, fatherhood, homophobia and violence against the LBTQ+ community. It’s important to accept those we love for who they are because life truly is short. You wouldn’t want someone to leave this earth without them knowing you loved them. Ike and Buddy Lee had to learn how to navigate life with their minds full of unspoken words they had wished they said.
This story is full of heartbreak, regrets and vengeance. Do not be surprised to see this submitted for Book of the Year nominations.
