Africatown is a hub for Black economic empowerment

K. Wyking Garrett, the CEO of Africatown, had one goal in mind when developing this economic hub, to empower Seattle’s Black community. Africatown, also known as the District or Central District (CD) is an epicenter for Black people in Seattle. Inside Africatown, there is Africatown Community Land Trust Seattle, Africatown Central District Preservation and Development Association, Africatown Center for Education and Innovation, and Black Dot Underground.

Rolling out had the opportunity to talk with Garrett to discuss Africatown, inspiration, and things that impact his everyday life. 


What inspires you to show up at work every day?

First and foremost self-knowledge, followed by our ancestors and my children. For better or worse, our future is what we make it, whether by intentional design or by inadvertent neglect. We all make history every day, and I want to make mine count.


Describe the skills that will be essential to future entrepreneurs, business leaders and innovators.

Managing your psychology, continual learning, communication, and people skills. In addition, creative problem-solving, and collaboration.
