Taylor Swift kicked off the ceremony with a tribute to the legendary singer and songwriter Carole King, singing her hit song “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.” King made it known in her speech that singers and songwriters not only stand on her shoulders, but they stand on Aretha Franklin’s shoulders as well. She then introduced Jennifer Hudson to sing “Natural Woman,” a song King wrote.
Hall of Famer Dr. Dre inducted James Todd Smith. Ladies Love Cool James was the first artist on Def Jam Records, having signed his deal and the age of 17. Now a pioneer in hip-hop. Eminem and Jennifer Lopez joined LL Cool J on stage for his performance. Angela Bassett announced the induction of Tina Turner into the Hall of Fame. Turner means so much to rock ‘n’ roll as she taught Mick Jagger how to dance and had David Bowie loving her style. Tina and Ike Turner were inducted in 1991. Turner was not in attendance, but Christina Aguilera, H.E.R, and Keith Urban paid tribute to her.
Dave Chappelle announced the induction of Jay-Z into the Hall of Fame. Former President Barack Obama spoke words of gratitude to the artist and business mogul. Artists from Rihanna, Missy, Pharrell, Idris Elba, Lena Waithe, his lovely wife Beyoncé, and many more quoted some of his most iconic lyrics in a video slide show. Jay-Z, in his speech, shouted out Dame Dash for what they accomplished together even though they don’t see eye to eye right now. He also acknowledges legendary rappers KRS-One, Rakim, LL Cool J, and Big Daddy Kane as admired artists.
