When asked if the Braves have an environment welcoming of its Black fan base, Murray declined to give more than a vague answer.
“I have a few blood relatives who have made a vow to never enter Truist Park,” Murray said. “Last time I went to see a Braves game, I went there to see a game, but I saw some other stuff. I was made to feel ill at ease. I don’t want to go into detail … read between the lines.”
Black fan Brandon Brown made a conscious decision to attend the Atlanta parade instead of Cobb because he believed there would be more Black fans at the downtown celebration. Brown is from Cobb County but currently lives in southwest Atlanta.
“Of course, when I came to the parade, everybody was like, ‘[There will] be a lot of White people out here,’ ” Brown said. “… It’s just a stereotype that draws a lot of people away. From the Black [perspective], it’s all about football and basketball.”
