Michael Strahan conquered the football field with the New York Giants and secured a Super Bowl ring and win in his Hall of Fame career before taking over morning television. The “Good Morning America” anchor told his co-hosts Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos and their viewers that he was headed to space. Strahan revealed he will be on board for Blue Origin’s third human flight into space, which takes off Dec. 9.

“Blue Origin, they approached me and they asked if I wanted to be a crew member. Without hesitation, I said yes,” he excitedly told the audience.

Strahan won’t be making the trek alone. Also on board will be Laura Shepard Churchley, the daughter of Alan Shepard, the first American to fly to space. Strahan and Shepard Churchley are both honorary guests. The remaining four crew members are Dylan Taylor, Evan Dick, Lane Bess and Cameron Bess, who all paid for their seats on the flight. The Bess’ will make history as the first parent-child pair to fly to space together.

Strahan will be given a stipend as well from Blue Origin as a crew member, which he plans to donate to The Boys & Girls Club. He further stated that he believed he was sitting on the edge of technology and everything starts with risk takers as he pointed out that we wouldn’t be flying today if it weren’t for the Wright brothers.

“I believe that this is the way of being innovative, creative, pioneers in aviation, now space travel. And it’s going to take a while but I do believe that it will bring a lot of technological breakthroughs and also innovations to us here on Earth, I just wanted to be a part of it,” he further stated on “Good Morning America.”

The Blue Origin flight is scheduled for liftoff at 9 a.m. local time on Dec. 9 from a remote launch site in West Texas. Blue Origin will provide coverage of the flight on its website (www.blueorigin.com) that day starting 90 minutes before launch. The rocket company is owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who was part of the initial flight in July. Take a look at Michael Strahan’s announcement below.
