What characteristics did you look for in women that are leading this initiative?
The Highland Project is an intergenerational coalition of change-makers from across the country in the fields of education, economic empowerment, well-being, and political agency. We look to invest in Black women who have led structural change deeply rooted in community, who do not go at it alone but value collective strength, who envision a future larger than their leadership, and are committed to making deep multigenerational change for Black communities.
What other suggestions do you have for young Black women committed to changing the narrative in our communities?
Prioritize rest and love on yourself. As Black women, we always see the humanity in others, but we often have ourselves — our humanity — last on the list to care for. Love on yourself. We cannot sustain change in our communities if we are burnt out. We cannot be present for our loved ones if we are burnt out. We cannot disrupt generational trauma if we are burnt out.
