Tay Money hopes her thick skin helps her thrive in hip-hop

Tay Money said she felt “like a kid” performing “Assignment” at the Hawks game with the team’s cheerleaders. The single has over 2.5 million views on YouTube and is one of the more popular songs on the musical app TikTok.

“I feel like TikTok is a new thing, and I got to put my feet in it as well and be one of those people,” Tay Money said. “When you think of TikTok, maybe you think of Tay Money.”

The era of TikTok dances and simple songs picking up traction due to repetitive hooks over 808s isn’t something that began in 2021. It dates back to the earliest days of hip hop with “Rapper’s Delight” before evolving to Kris Kross’ “Jump,” Soulja Boy’s “Crank Dat,” and Lil Pump’s “Gucci Gang.” There’s room for all sub-genres of rap music, whether it’s thought-provoking and multi-layered or just a surface-level, catchy tune that you can dance to in front of a stationary cell phone.

It’s all of the art that comes in different shapes and sizes, which is the beauty of Tay Money.
