Kevin Lemons discusses the impact his family has had in his life

When did you start building your choir?

I started choir when I was 17 years old, my last year of high school. Like any other young person, you’re doing it because at that time it was the cool thing to do. Not really taking it seriously, and things of that nature. So I really didn’t take it seriously. I had an ability to sing, direct and teach, so I just wanted a group. But then it took on another horse when my father passed, and I was the age of 22. That’s when it became very serious for me because I didn’t have anybody to lean on but God. So that whole thing changed, and I’ve just been running it ever since and I’m still there. I’m not going away. It’s what my father instilled in us to do.

What did your father teach you that shaped you into the man you are today?

My father taught me how to love people where they are. Everybody that you come in contact with is not going to operate on the same skill as you and they’re not going to think the same way as you. You have to be open to people to understand for them to make their mistakes, and you make your mistakes and y’all come together and reason together. That’s why the Bible says, let us reason together.
