Disneyland invites guests to “Celebrate Soulfully,” with a series of monthlong, culturally rich events. Highlighting Black culture and heritage, visitors to the Disney resort can participate in new experiences while enjoying music, food and art.
For the first time at the California-based resort, guests have the opportunity to experience a musical celebration titled “Celebrate Gospel.” Taking place on the Fantasyland stage, community choirs celebrated artists, and honored guests join forces to further enrich the soulful experience. During our visit to the park on Feb. 19, rolling out had the honor to witness the joyful sounds of Stellar Award-winning singer, songwriter Kierra Sheard. Also joining Sheard on the Fantasyland stage throughout the day gospel group Sacred Groove moved the crowd with a mix of a cappella performances and modern hymns. In addition to gospel, visitors can enjoy R&B, and reggae nightly on the Downtown Disney stage.
Adding to the soulful experience, Black art is full display throughout the resort. The carefully curated pieces pay homage to both Disney films and talent within the Disney ranks. Muralist Marcella Swett, a senior production artisan, creates chalk art honoring the spirits of her ancestors in the main walkways. Working meticulously as on-lookers watch, Swett is surrounded by yellow butterflies which she feels are her loved ones.
