On June 20, a college basketball player was killed, and eight people were wounded in an early morning shootout in New York.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting and found several people wounded. There were others who went to the hospital on their own.

According to reports, there was a gathering taking place that was organized by Harlem rapper Rich Rhymer. Witnesses told CBS News that there were around 40 or 50 shots fired, but it’s unclear what sparked the dispute.

A gun was recovered at the scene, but no arrests have been made.

Darius Lee, a 21-year-old senior at Houston Baptist University in Texas, was pronounced dead at Lincoln Medical Center.

Lee played at a community college in New York’s Sullivan County before enrolling at Houston Baptist University. He was recently named the university’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year. He led the team in scoring and rebounding last season, and finished sixth in the nation in steals per game.

He was set to graduate in December with a bachelor’s in sports management.
