Why did you create a Deluxe Edition of Overcomer?
I just thought it would be great to add live versions of songs because it’s just a whole different experience for me. When I sing live it’s like I go to another dimension. I’m so excited about the live portions. To me it’s just even better to have them. I thought the studio was some of my best work, but to me it just keeps going, plus I added some new songs. I did some duets and collaborations that I’ve never done before. I’m in awe myself, because I’m enjoying it. I’m enjoying the music. Normally I really don’t like to listen to myself, but I think the songs and messages of the songs is what really is just taking me to another level.
Your family is very involved in your work and your and David’s relationship is a positive reflection of that. What advice can you give to couples and families that are struggling?
Our faith is our foundation. To me, God is the center of everything. Sometimes you may have to go back and start over, meaning date each other over again and put that time in. Go in and check the medicine cabinet and see the things that you need to throw away. Just line up and ask each other, “what am I doing for you? What can I do to make the relationship better between me and you?” and check out things that you might need to change about yourself. Sometimes we’re always looking for everyone else to do the change, but really, it may be you that needs to make a change.
Your son, David Mann Jr., recently won Music Video of the Year at the 37th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards for his work on “Help Me.” How did this happen?
Oh my God, it was incredible. He came to me and was like, “I have an idea for a video, Mom. I know that we can go to the church or talk to the pastor, but I really think it needs to be brought home to let the people of God know that it’s OK to go ask for help or whatever it is that you need to do to help pull yourself together.” He had some ideas and we we ran some things by each other, [and then figured] out what we wanted to do and talked about who we wanted to be in it. He really did take the driver’s seat and made it happen and I’m just really, really proud of him.
