Pinterest has introduced a groundbreaking technology that uses shape, size and form to identify different body types. This revolutionary AI innovation aims to increase representation and make the company a more positive space for all users with over 5 billion images on the platform.
The technology is being used to shape the platform’s algorithms, ensuring that search results and related content for women’s fashion and wedding-related topics are diverse.
Since 2018, Pinterest has been committed to promoting diversity and inclusivity through its products and policies. The company has developed technologies that allow users to specifically refine search results based on hair patterns, as well as integrate skin tone ranges into beauty try-on features.
Inspired by user behavior and discussions around body representation, Pinterest’s all-encompassing product team collaborated with experts both inside and outside the company to develop the technology.
Pinterest has also partnered with external organizations and individuals such as the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA), to ensure that the needs of the plus-size community are considered in the product development process. The company believes that social media spaces should be universal and welcoming to people of all sizes and hopes that its work will inspire other companies to prioritize this as well.
In addition to the body type technology, Pinterest is launching a Creator Inclusion Fund to support North American creators in the fashion and beauty communities who create content. The company will also spotlight size-inclusive brands on its platform to celebrate diversity and provide users with inspiring and shoppable content.
