Veteran actress, classic television legend and 5x Emmy nominee Marla Gibbs stands as a testament to resilience, talent, and the enduring power of breaking barriers in Hollywood. At 92 years young, she was recently celebrated at the 5th annual AAFCA TV Honors for her unparalleled contributions to film and television. The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), the premier body of Black film critics in the world, presented Gibbs with the prestigious Legend Award, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the television industry. Gibbs’ recognition at the AAFCA TV Honors not only celebrates her remarkable career but also underscores the importance of acknowledging those who have made significant contributions to the representation of Black stories on screen. AAFCA, which was co-founded by Gil L. Robertson (current president), stands as a commendable institution for recognizing the unsung heroes in Hollywood, those who make a difference by telling stories that are often omitted.
